Patients with severe to profound hearing loss who do not derive enough benefit from hearing aids may be candidates for cochlear implantation.
The implant is placed in a shallow bony bed behind the ear, and the electrode is carefully placed in the cochlea. This allows direct stimulation of the hearing nerve once the implant is activated.
Adjustments are made over time by the audiologist (mapping) to ensure the best hearing outcome possible.
