Cholesteatoma is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually starting in the middle ear, that can lead to infections, hearing loss, and damage to structures in and surrounding the middle ear.
Treatment is by surgical removal, with the aim to create a safe, dry ear, and – if possible – to improve or preserve hearing.
As cholesteatoma sometimes recurs, follow up is very important.
