ABOUT DR OLA BASSON

Dr Basson graduated from UCT in 1994. She specialised at the University of Stellenbosch, obtaining her Fellowship in 2002. She then worked as a consultant at Groote Schuur and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, focusing on otology and paediatric ENT.

Dr Basson worked at 2Military Hospital, Wynberg, as Head of the ENT Clinical Unit for 13 years.

In 2024, Dr Basson relocated to Kingsbury Hospital, opening a full-time private practice where she continues to provide comprehensive, high-quality care for patients of all ages.

Ongoing learning

Dr Basson is an active participant and contributor in the medical community. She is part of several professional bodies, including:

  • The South African Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (SASOHNS)
  • The South African Cochlear Implant Group

Dr Basson enjoys sharing her ENT knowledge, and in addition to formal teaching of junior doctors, she is faculty at the annual Cape Temporal Bone Course and the Diving Medicine courses run by the SA Navy.

In addition to her specialist training , Dr Basson regularly attends local and international ENT courses, workshops, and conferences to ensure that her practice remains aligned with the latest advances in ENT surgery and patient care.

  • Cochlear Implantation Course – Leiden, Netherlands & Insbruk, Austria
  • Microsurgery of the Temporal Bone – Zurich, Switzerland

Due to the need for prevention of ear barotrauma in military divers, submariners, and airforce pilots, she was at the forefront of treating Eustachian tube dysfunction with balloon tuboplasty, performing the first dilatation in the Western Cape in 2013.

She has been a member of the Ear Institute Cochlear Implant team since 2011, which has enabled her to restore hearing to young and old. In 2022, she added another first for the Western Cape: the piezoelectric bone conducting implant.

Outside work, Dr Basson is an avid hiker, cat-owner, talented cake decorator, wife, and mother to her three wonderful children – two of whom are following in her footsteps and currently studying medicine at Stellenbosch University.
